Márquez exploits a Philip Island and extends its lead in the standings
The Ducati rider won the Sprint after a close fight with Jorge Martín, who crashed and was taken to the circuit's medical center. The Australian round will conclude on Sunday with the final race for MotoGP at Philip Island.
The defining move came at the end of the eighth lap. Jorge Martín attempted to pass Marc Márquez, lost control of his Aprilia and went down. While he was attended to at the medical center, Márquez took control of the Sprint and crossed the finish line first.
The duel between Márquez and Martín had been fought with minimal margins throughout the opening laps. The Aprilia rider was looking for a chance to overtake the Ducati leader, but the attempt ended with a crash that forced him to leave the track. "That was the key moment of the race," one could say from the grandstands: the Sprint changed when the two riders were no longer together.
A new victory for Márquez and a podium for Ducati
With Martín out of the contest, Márquez managed the advantage and secured his 24th victory in the Sprint format. Álex Márquez completed the Ducati one-two, while Fabio Di Giannantonio rose from eighth place to take third and complete the Italian manufacturer's sweep of the podium.
- Marc Márquez finished first and added 24th Sprint victory to his record.
- Álex Márquez was second and Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium for Ducati.
- Marco Bezzecchi, of Aprilia, finished fourth.
- Pedro Acosta was fifth for KTM, ahead of Ai Ogura, Brad Binder, Jack Miller, Diogo Moreira and Iker Lecuona.
The championship situation also changed after a series of races in which the lead had alternated between the two riders. Márquez now has 365 points, ten more than Martín's 355. The Spaniard still has a chance to recover ground if he is medically cleared for Sunday's main race.
“The Sprint was settled by Martín's fall. From there, Márquez had to control the race and make sure no one complicated the final outcome.”Nahuel Agüero
The final race at Philip Island
Sunday's Grand Prix of Australia will be the last MotoGP race held at Philip Island. That adds another layer of tension to a championship in which ten points separate the first two riders. Martín's participation remains under medical observation, while Márquez arrives with the lead and a Sprint victory on his resume.
